Guide to Collecting Figurines
Figurine collecting is a hobby that has become increasingly more popular throughout the years as a result of the expansion of the Internet. Twenty years ago figurine collectors were forced to visit auctions and garage sales to search out that perfect figurine they were hunting for. Today, however, typing “figurine collecting” into Google brings up thousands of search hits. If you decide to take up the fun-filled hobby of collecting figurines, there are a few things to know before you set out.
First, know what quality of figurines you are looking for. There are a million different figurines out there, as well as millions of different kinds of collectors. Some collectors are more serious than others, and will want only specific, one-of-a-kind figurines. If this sounds like you, then you should know how to make sure that your figurine is the real deal.
For instance, if you are a collector of the popular Hummel figurines, you should know how to spot a true Hummel (Hummels, by the way, are charming figurines of children first created by a Bavarian nun and then bought by the Goebel Company). A true Hummel will increase in value over time, and as a result, there are many fake Hummels on the market. You will know a Hummel by the raised signature of Sister M.I. Hummel on the back of every piece, as well as the Goebel stamp on the bottom of the figurine. If you are buying off of an Internet seller, be sure to have them send you photos of these important insignias before you buy.
Try to form an idea of the type of figurines you want to collect. Figurine collecting can become quite overwhelming when you set out on a search with no specifics in mind – you may end up with your head spinning from seeing all of the available figurines. And, you might also end up with an empty pocketbook from buying too many! Instead of going on a buying spree, do some careful research into what kind of figurines you would like to collect. Do you enjoy animals, super heroes or even holiday figurines? Knowing the general type of figurine you want to purchase will be immensely helpful in narrowing down your search, particularly if you are searching via the Internet.
One final step might be to check into the value of the figurines you are purchasing. Marks, rubs, scratches or flaking of paint can cause the value of collectible figurines to plummet. Be sure to learn the difference between “mint” and “good” condition. You may check various online directories in order to research the value of figurines and how their value fluctuates over the years too.
Some figurine collectors have taken pleasure in compiling a vast collection of lovely figurines that they can leave to their grandchildren. This can be a meaningful gift to pass on, as some will become particularly valuable over time. Figurine collecting can be a fantastic hobby, as well as a way to leave your loved ones valuable mementos. Head to an auction, or simply turn on your PC, and let the fun of collecting figurines begin!
